Sir Roger Bannister: Documenting his Influence in the Field of Autonomic Neurology

Objective:
To explore the impact of Sir Roger Banniser in the field of autonomic neurology
Background:

Autonomic nervous system disorders, which include syncope, orthostatic hypotension, and postural tachycardia have become increasingly recognized as a common secondary feature of many neurological disorders and can even be considered as a primary inherited condition. Sir Roger Bannister, though renowned for being the first to run a sub-4 minute mile, substantially contributed to establishing and modernizing the field of autonomic neurology.

Design/Methods:

A literature review was conducted via PubMed and Google Scholar to chronicle the personal and professional life of Sir Roger Bannister. The literature search examined Dr. Bannister’s pivotal role in establishing autonomic dysfunction as a distinct neurological specialty in the mid-twentieth century, a period when the field remained fragmented and understudied.

Results:

Born in Harrow, London, in 1929, Bannister pursued dual careers in athletics and medicine at Oxford University. Through his investigations in spinal cord injuries, thermoregulation, and autonomic failure, Bannister deepened the understanding of autonomic neurology. In collaboration with various disciplines and medical scientists, Bannister published over eighty original papers investigating the nature of autonomic disorders. By establishing Britain’s first autonomic investigation laboratory and founding the Clinical Autonomic Research Society, He laid the groundwork for the field’s modern development.

Conclusions:

Roger Bannister’s contributions transformed autonomic neurology from a fragmented area of study into a recognized and established neurological discipline.
