Objective:

This study aims to compare the naming retrieval ability for each word class according to the type of fluent/non-fluent aphasics.

Background:

We investigated to analyze the performance of naming tasks by word class in patients with aphasia, and to identify the double dissociation phenomenon retrieving noun and verb. Studies reported non-fluent aphasia(NFA) have poorer verb retrieval than noun(Goodglass & Mann, 1985), fluent aphasia(FA) appears conversely with NFA(Miceli et al., 1984). Regardless of types, some studies indicate declined verb than noun. Based on conflicting results about retrieval abilities, this study aims to compare naming performances by word class with 11 aphasia patients and to clarify word retrieval mechanism of them as clear.

Design/Methods:

We recruited 6 FA(age: 71.0±8.0, education: 6.5±2.3, PK-WAB-R AQ: 52.08±17.2) and 5 NFA(age: 67.6±8.05, education: 10.20±2.68, PK-WAB-R AQ: 39.94±21.03) as subjects. Noun naming  task used scores of confrontation naming task among naming tasks of PK-WAB-R(Paradise Korean Western Aphasia Battery-Revised; Kim & Na, 2013), and verb naming task used scores of verb naming task of D-ASLAN(Digital-ASsessmet of LANguage and cognition in stroke; Hwang et al., 2024), then compared them with type of patients. Considering that the subjects' age, education years, and AQ scores were not satisfied with  equivalences, the Mann-Whitney-U test of SPSS was conducted to analyze the difference in retrieval tasks for each word class in groups.

Results:

Verifying the results as difference of task performance by noun and verb between two types of aphasia, it didn't reveal significant difference(FA: U=18.00, p>.05; NFA: U=12.50, p>.05). Compared with performance differences by word class in FA and NFA, regardless of types it revealed that verb retrieval performance was lower than noun, significantly(FA-noun=53.05±40.42, FA-verb=26.1±26.44, NFA-noun=44.66±36.70, NFA-verb=22.00±23.05).

Conclusions:

Verb has difficulty of semantic represent activation by its less network, can come performance differences with naturally. Accordingly, there has limitation to explain double dissociation, considers precise research in further.
